John Rae

Sunday 23rd October as part of the Auckland jazz festival, the New Zealand premier of John Rae’s ‘Dulce', a specially commissioned work performed by New Zealand ensemble The Troubles at the Thirsty Dog, Auckland at part of the Auckland Jazz Festival.

‘Where the Wild Clematis Grows’ for jazz ensemble and soloist received its first premier at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival in 2015 and will receive its New Zealand premier performed by The Troubles at the Auckland Jazz Festival 2017.

Inspired by a small collection of poems by returned ANZAC soldiers, published after the First World War, entitled ‘Diggers Poems’ the title is taken from a line in the poem ‘The Landing’

The wildflowers bloom around their graves
The sad sea breeze that blows
Sings, “Never a coward came from the land
Where the wild clematis grows."
