NZ'S FIRST WORLD WAR CENTENARY 2014–2019

Memorial Oaks online resource

The North Otago Museum is developing an online resource linking information on North Otago Memorial Oaks with the Cenotaph database and information from the Waitaki District Archives.

The memorial oak commemorating Pvte M.J. McLaughlin

The North Otago Museum plans to develop an online resource that will provide information on New Zealand's largest war memorial, the Memorial Oaks.

Staff at the museum will be working alongside the Waitaki District Libraries and Archive, Waitaki District Council and other groups to develop the resource.

The plan is to create a Google Maps-type interface that will plot each tree. Visitors to the website will then be able to click on any tree and get information on the person it commemorates. The information presented will draw on the redeveloped cenotaph database, the collections in the Waitaki District Archive (including letters sent requesting memorial trees from next of kin), and other information on those commemorated.

The online resource will also have general information on the history of the Memorial Oaks.
