A choral music concert held on Friday 25 April 2014, 5.00pm, at the Auckland Town Hall.
One hundred years after the start of the First World War, Auckland Choral presents a moving programme entitled ‘War and Peace’.
The concert opens with the powerful and famous Toccata and Fugue by JS Bach. Haydn’s Mass in Time of War, his most popular mass, was composed as a cry for peace, and portrays an era of unprecedented political and military unrest in Austria.
German composer Michael Renhart reflects his deep wish for peace in the pure structure of his Requiem, a work unfinished at the time of his death in New Zealand. Similar sentiments are found in Wilfred Owen’s revered Anthem for Doomed Youth, which is set to music by David Hamilton for this special Anzac Day Commemoration.
