NZ'S FIRST WORLD WAR CENTENARY 2014–2019

Dulce et Decorum est

Dulce et Decorum est is a new project by jazz composer John Rae inspired by New Zealand war poetry written by returning First World War soldiers.

'Dulce et Decorum est' is jazz composer John Rae's project in honour of the New Zealand service men and women of the First World War.

The new musical work for jazz ensemble and soloists is inspired by a small collection of poems by returned ANZAC soldiers, published after World War I entitled ‘Diggers Poems’ (C. Ryan) (J. Ryan) 1919.

The composition is entitled Where the Wild Clematis Grows a line taken from the poem ‘The Landing’ (also know as ‘The Landing at Gaba Tepe’).

'The wildflowers bloom around their graves;
The sad sea breeze that blows
Sings, "Never a coward came from the land
Where the wild clematis grows."'

Where the Wild Clematis Grows’ will be premiered at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival 2015 and Auckland Jazz Festival 2016.
