I am writing a cello concerto for the renowned young French cellist, Sébastien Hurtaud, to be premiered by the Brussels Philharmonic and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. We are looking for funding to commission the writing of the piece. The piece was directly inspired by my visit to ANZAC Cove in Gallipoli a couple of years ago, when I performed at the dawn ceremony on ANZAC day there. I had always known that my great-grandmother's 3 older brothers all died in the First World War, but this was the first time that the true human tragedy of it hit me hard. The idea of writing for cello and orchestra came to me soon after that - the ability of the cello to sing and cry with the epic potential of an orchestral concerto seemed perfect to express the inexpressible.
