On the centenary of the conclusion of the First World War, the Manawatu Catholic Worker celebrated the heroes of peace with a calendar featuring stories of men and women who stood up for peace.
On the centenary of the conclusion of the First World War, and in the midst of ongoing wars, the Manawatu Catholic Worker chose to celebrate Heroes of Peace. Those brave men and women who courageously declared with their lives that there is a better way: that violence, oppression and evil are best confronted and resisted through non-violent means. We agree with their witness, that violence only begets more violence, and that hatred is not overcome by hatred, but can only be overcome by love. With Pope Francis, we say: 'Violence is not the cure for a broken world.'
While the bravery of soldiers is often celebrated, we celebrate the great bravery and sacrifice shown by Heroes of Peace. Non-violence is not a weak and passive stance. It is active, creative and courageous.
We hope and pray that this calendar will inform and inspire future Heroes of Peace. The future of life depends on all of us becoming more like Heroes of Peace.
