Living Remembrance Floral Carpets

Creating five outdoor floral carpets to commemorate the First World War in Whangarei. Unveiled February 2014.

This major outdoor art installation is the first in a series of formal commemorative programmes planned for Whangarei throughout the 2014-2018 centenary period, and is an Endless Summer Festival event.
The carpets have been designed by five prominent Northland artists and will be assembled by florists together with a team of community volunteers. They will be accompanied by texts, catalogues and filmed documentation streaming online across New Zealand and internationally.
The carpets will be on display at the bridge during the day on February 26 to 28 2014, with attendants between 10am and 4pm.
The official opening is at 5.30pm next Tuesday. At 8pm on the Friday a ceremonial dismantling will take place. The flowers will be floated down the Hatea River, with a candlelight vigil and blessing.
