Memorial service to commemorate 98th anniversary of the Battle of Broodseinde


A New Zealand memorial service to commemorate the 98th anniversary of the Battle of Broodseinde on 4 October 2015, held at the site of the battle in Belgium.

On 4 October 2015, the day after the Dave Gallaher Rugby Tournament, a service will be held to mark the 98th anniversary of the Battle of Broodseinde, in which Dave Gallaher was killed. Gallaher was the most famous of the thirteen former All Blacks rugby players killed in the First World War – read more about him on NZHistory.
The service will be held at 11.30 am at the New Zealand Memorial at 's Gravenstafel, Belgium, which was erected in commemoration of the Battle of Broodeseinde on the farthest point the New Zealand Division reached on 4 October 1917.
The commemoration is designed to mark the end of the New Zealand Defence Force rugby team's visit to Belgium. While the Battle of Broodseinde was considered a military success, it came at the cost of 1,700 New Zealand casualties including 350 deaths.
