Great War Stories short films


Short films telling personal stories about New Zealanders affected by Gallipoli and the First World War.

Great War Stories is a series of short (3-4 minute) films which tell personal stories about a range of New Zealanders who were impacted by the First World War. 

It is a combined project of the Alexander Turnbull library, Archives New Zealand and Manatū Taonga - Ministry for Culture and Heritage

Each story draws on research into primary texts such as letters, diaries and newspaper accounts and be illustrated with images drawn from the collections of the Alexander Turnbull Library and Archives New Zealand. 

The stories include soldiers, but also people on the home front, such as lovers and family, who were affected by the First World War.

The first series of ran from 4-10 August 2014, and a second series was screened around Anzac Day 2015. You can view the completed first series of Great War Stories on The third series will be screened on TV3 from 18-24 April, and will be made available on NZHistory shortly afterwards.

Great War Stories were commissioned from AC Productions and have been funded by NZ on Air.
