World War I Heritage Trail: Wellington’s Parades and Places

This free booklet features a heritage trail visiting 22 places that provide insight into Wellington’s participation in the war and includes a map illustrating WWI parade and procession routes.

World War I Heritage Trail: Wellington’s Parades and Places booklet cover

The war touched the lives of every New Zealander and left its mark on our cities. Wellington, although never a theatre of war, bears evidence of having prepared for war, struggled with losses and endured through an event that irrevocably changed our country and the world. The story of Wellington’s involvement in the war can be told through our heritage places.
This free booklet contains a selection of those places and may be read as a heritage trail arranged geographically to align with the parade and procession routes of the First World War, several of which are illustrated on the trail map inside the booklet.
Pick up a copy at the Wellington Civic Square iSite or Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, or view it online.
