An online exhibition and timeline to commemorate the centenary using documents and images from the Auckland Council Archives collection, plus indexing of names from war memorials.
To commemorate the centenary of the First World War, Auckland Council Archives has developed an online exhibition and timeline featuring material from the Auckland Council Archives collections.
The exhibition focuses on the council activities during and after the war, including involvement in relief funds, provisions for returned soldiers, commemorative events, and the construction and placement of war memorials.
The timeline features excerpts from the official minute books of those local authorities in existence in the Auckland region during the First World War to provide an insight into how Auckland reacted and contributed to the war effort. The timeline will be added to for each year of the commemorations.
In addition, our volunteers have transcribed and researched the names from several First World War memorials and rolls of honour from across the Auckland region and these are available to search. Names of soldiers within these resources have been linked to the Auckland Museum’s Cenotaph database, records within Archives New Zealand’s Archway database and images from Auckland Libraries Special Collections.
