“War has broken out with Germany.” This 1914 telegram message from George V King of England was read out today on Parliament Grounds by actor Hewett Humphrey. He repeated the 5 August 1914 speech by Lord Liverpool, Governor of New Zealand.

More than 141,000 First World War service files are now available online, adding to the wealth of information detailing New Zealanders experience of the war made available by Archives New Zealand and the National Library.

A ceremony to mark the beginning of the First World War for New Zealand will take place on Monday 4 August in Parliament Grounds, Wellington, from 9.00am. Public are welcome to attend the ceremony, which will also be webcast live.

A 100-Gun Salute fired from the waterfront, in front of Te Papa, at about 9.20am will be part of an official ceremony (at Parliament Grounds) to mark the beginning of the First World War for New Zealand.
